My Theatrical Philosophy

  • Creative Growth

I believe that every production is an opportunity for creatives to grow in their craft. During rehearsals and through the pre-production process, I focus energy on educating my team and learning from others as well. Without a concentration on growth as a performer, designer or support staff, the process does not live up to its fullest potential. No matter the area of discipline, no matter the level of experience, creative growth serves not only the individual, but the company and the industry as a whole.

  • Fostering the Most Creative Environment

Through all phases of the production process it is the director’s responsibility to foster an environment where people are heard, respected, and encouraged to explore their creativity in their field. My dedication to the creative environment is at the center of my approach and process. Respecting boundaries, personal space, creative process, and organizational traditions is paramount to ensuring that a production receives the proper care.

  • Collaboration & Empathy

My approach to the process is collaborative by nature. When working on a show, I want to hear the thoughts, feelings and opinions of all those who are working towards the same goal; from the set builders to the Stage Manager, to the volunteers, to the actors. Understanding that theatre is a collaboration makes for compelling, engaging and unforgettable experiences for both audiences and staff alike.

Practicing empathy is the secret to the recipe of magnificent theatre. Perspective, understanding, processing and valuing the opinions and feelings of others is instrumental in creating lifelong relationships working or otherwise. I do my best to empathize with other’s lived experiences or processes even when my own do not align.
